Important note for private employers

A federal holiday does not automatically require a private business to close or provide paid leave. State and local rules, contracts, bank schedules, payroll cutoffs, and employer policies should be reviewed separately.

When a federal holiday falls on Saturday, it is generally observed on the preceding Friday for most federal employees; when it falls on Sunday, it is generally observed on the following Monday. Accordingly, Independence Day 2026 is observed on Friday, July 3.
